Saturday, November 23rd Live on Zoom
7pm Italy, 10am Los Angeles, 1pm New York
Dr. Caroline Campbell, who since 2022 has been Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, will join the Studiolo to discuss the art of Trecento Siena. The exhibition draws on her recent book The Power Of Art—A Human History Of Art From Babylon To New York City (2024, Pegasus). In her Studiolo talk, she will look at how the civic life of Siena shaped the remarkable innovations of Duccio, the Lorenzetti brothers, and Simone Martini who, she argues, changed the course of painting in Western Europe.
Born and raised in Belfast, Dr. Campbell has spent her career in three leading international art museums as a curator and senior leader.
She has held positions at the Ashmolean Museum, the Courtauld Gallery and the National Gallery, London. Since 2018 she has worked as Director of Collections and Research at the National Gallery, London. An alumna of the Center for Curatorial Leadership in New York, Dr. Campbell has an outstanding reputation for delivering research, engagement, and digital programs, illustrating her wide-ranging expertise in Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present day. She has curated several major exhibitions, published widely, and is active as a Trustee of several arts organizations in the UK. Among her curatorial achievements is the upcoming exhibition Siena: The Rise of Painting, which will be shown in 2024-25at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery in London.
